Damir Alejandro Romano Tuas Author Study on Stephen King

I chose to study Stephen King because I enjoy reading his books. I like Stephen King novels because they are full of suspense and horror. I also like how King adds multiple plot-twist in his stories. "He had fired the gun empty... and then stopped to reload so he could shoot each of them again!" This quote comes form King's book Different Seasons and is an example of how King uses suspense and horror in his books.

There are a couple things I would like to learn about the author. One question I have is: what education did the author have? I am interested in knowing about King's education because it might reflect why he is such a good author. Another question I have is: did the author have a troubled / unfortunate childhood? The reason I ask this question is because maybe something tragic happened to King in his past and this potentially could have influenced Kings dark style of writing.

  1. Andy Dufresne is the protagonist in the novella Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption. Andy was described as being a short, neat, meticulous man with sandy blond hair, and small hands. Andy was sent to prison for a crime he didn't do; the murder of his wife and her lover. Andy was very upset that he had to do time for a crime that he didn't commit. Before prison life Andy was the Vice President of a Bank. Andy is very intelligent. At Shawshank he gave prison guards financial advice. Another characteristic of Andy is that he is caring for others. Andy helped other inmates at Shawshank get their GED by tutoring them.

I do not relate with Andy Dufresne's circumstances but I can relate with some of his thoughts and thinking. Andy had a rough time in prison, he was even raped. But throughout all his struggles Andy never stopped being optimistic. I can relate with Andy's will to never lose hope. I think it's important to have positive outlook. Andy is important to this storyline because he is the main character and everything revolves around him.

  2. I just finished reading Apt. Pupil by Stephen King. I really liked this bizarre story. Todd Bowden, the protagonist, puts on a good front. On the outside he looks handsome, he earns exceptional grades at school, and he is very polite. But the secret truth is that Todd is a monster; this is reflected in his thoughts and actions.

The story starts off with Todd Bowden black mailing an ex-Nazi war criminal, Mr. Dussander. Todd threatens to expose Mr. Dussander’s dark history to the authorities, unless Mr. Dussander gives him specific details on the horrible things he did in Patin, a Nazi-run concentration camp. Later in the story Todd Bowden goes on a killing spree, targeting homeless people. I will not reveal the end of the story, but I think that the end is the most suspenseful part of Apt. Pupil.

  3. Stephen King is a horror fiction writer that writes his stories in different point of views. One characteristic of his writing style is that he allows readers to identify with his dynamic characters. King also creates identifiable characters that elicit immediate sympathy from readers due to inherently flawed but human traits. King is a frequent user of symbolism and metaphors. Another characteristic of King’s writing style is that he writes suspenseful material.
Stephen King’s suspenseful writing style directly contributes to the dark mood and tone in his books. King usually incorporates multiple plot-twist in his stories which adds to his suspenseful writing style. King does a good job at creating characters because he uses great detail and makes his characters relatable.

  4. For my visual I was thinking about making a creative trifold. I think this is a good idea because I can put a lot of material on the trifold. This includes pictures, text, and decorative material.

My trifold will contain a time line of Stephen King's life. My trifold will also have quotations from King novels. With this information I can answer my research question. I will sum up all my work in a conclusion section that will be included in my trifold.
