Morgan B Author Study on Jody Picoult

I selected Jodi Picoult as an author for the author study because I have heard about some of her books before, but have never actually read one.  A lot of my friends last year were reading her books for a class, and they said that they liked it, so I then decided to read one of her books, too.  I think that this author’s writing is unique because instead of just focusing on one person’s point of view, she puts each chapters into a different characters point of view.  That way the reader gets a better idea as to what is going on in everyone’s mind.
I would like to know why the author chose to write her book in different point of views.  Maybe she is doing it because it makes sense to the story, or she just wanted the reader to understand other people’s thoughts.  Also when I first started reading this book, Vanishing Acts, I did not quite understand what was happening which made me question a lot.  However, once I continues to read I got the main idea of the book and the authors writing style, so now I like it so far.

  1. Delia Hopkins is the protagonist in the book Vanishing Acts. She is an adult that is happily married and has a child of her own. Delia would do anything for her family and also is really close with her father. Her father is her role model and she looks up to him in just about everything she does; that is until her perspective of him changes when she finds out he lied about his whole life. Delia works with her dog to find missing people, a job that she is very passionate about. Although she does not know much about her mother, she is a lot like her. Delia is a fighter and she always has to finish whatever she has started. In this book, you can tell that Delia is a fighter when her own father goes to jail and she does everything in her power to get him out and have everything the way it used to be. This character can also be seen as an emotional mess. When she finds out that “Delia” is not her real name, her father has a different identity, and her mother is not actually dead, she is driven to go to Arizona to figure out who she really is. Here I can relate to Delia because if I was in her situation, I would do everything to find out my true identity.

I chose Delia as a character because everything in the book relates back to her story. All of the other characters in this book are on Delia’s side and everything has to do with her including; her father going to jail, her husband who is a lawyer working to get Delia’s father out of jail, and Delia’s best friend who is supporting her through this emotional time. This character is significant also because of the fact that everybody is trying to make Delia happy and all of the other characters actions, depend on Delia. If Delia was not a character in this book, there would be no story at all.

  3. I am almost finished with my first book Vanishing Acts. I think that Jodi Picoult’s writing itself is well written. The reader should be able to understand what is going on throughout the entire book because of the author’s way of description in her writing. However, at the beginning of the book, I really had no idea what was going on. It seemed as if I had just opened up to the middle of the book and started reading and tried to comprehend what was happening. This might have been because the author was referring to the main conflict in the book, something I did not know at the time. Considering I have never read any of Jodi Picoult’s books, this may be something that she does to catch the reader’s attention. Although I honestly do not know why, because all it did was confuse me. After the first couple chapters of reading my book, I began to grasp what the actual story was.

When it comes to the plot of the story, I do not like it so much. There is a lot of unrealistic scenarios and it is kind of frustrating to me. If something bad happens to the characters of the story, I think of all the ways that these characters can avoid the conflict by using common sense. I know the book is fiction, but the conflicts that happen in the story do not match up to the storyline. I do not know if this is just the way that the author likes to write her books, but I am beginning to think that I should have chosen an author that focuses on a genre that I am interested in. I am positive that there are people that enjoy the author’s books, but I do not prefer them.

  4. I would have to say that my author, Jodi Picoult, uses a lot of details rather than the language she is using. I think this because her books are not told in only one persons point of view: rather a series of characters. I feel like the reader can really get an exact idea of what is happening in the story because each chapter sort of acts as a "diary entry." Although this author does use some descriptive words, I think she gets more straight to the point, but elaborates and adds either more or less of details throughout each chapter. However, I think that when the author is writing certain words, it does not have a deeper meaning and is not put there for a reason.

I guess you can say that this author has structured writing. The reader can tell this because instead of just writing the entire book in one point of view, she makes sure that the reader understands who is supposed to be telling the story at a given time. I think this author's style of writing is more unique then other books I have read because each chapter basically sets another mood to the story. For example, one character who may feel sad would write about it in a chapter. Then the next chapter of the book would written in a happier perspective. This goes for both of the books I have read by Jodi Picoult.

  5. My question I have for my author is what is Jodi Picoult's target audience and what message is she trying to convey in her writing. So, for my visual I am planning to make a target, representing a target audience, and have my research question in the middle. Then branching off into different sections of the target will be the books I have read by this author and the things I got from the book. Then, other research I found by my author to answer my main question will be in different sections of the target.

I think that this visual will best convey to my audience because I am going to get my point across. If I research the right information to answer my question and provide everything that is on the rubric, then I think that my visual will portray what I learned. Also, if I have the information I took from the books I have read on the visual, the audience should understand why I chose the research question I did.

  6. The author study project was overall informative to me. I think that it had more pros then cons. Some pros were what I got out of the project and what I learned from the author of the books I read. It gave me a chance to research more in depth, where if I was reading for fun I would probably not do so. The only con I can think of is actually finding my information. It was a little difficult to find an exact answer to my research question, but I eventually pieced it together. Although, I do think that this project gave me more information instead of not making me learn anything at all.

I think that by doing this project it helped me develop as a reader because instead of just reading a book and being done with it, I had to analyze the books by my chosen author. I did this to help me develop a question through each of Jodi Picoult's books. Also, I do think that this project encouraged me to communicate with others about reading because I wanted to know what questions they had after reading their books. Each author has there own style and way of writing, so this helped me really focus on what my author was trying to say in her books. I did research about the author after choosing a question. By doing so, I found out about the authors life and why she writes what she does. Another thing that this project made me have is organization skills. This is because I had to figure out what do with different aspects of the information I found and somehow incorporate it into a final project.
