Anthony Castellon: a Author study on Ellen Hopkins
The reason I chose to do my author study on Ellen Hopkins is because I heard good feedback that Ellen Hopkins is a great writer. She also came to visit our school and I didn't get to meet her, which makes me wish she could come back so that I could ask her a few questions. As I read this book I get curious on why she wrote this book. I would like to know the reason why she wrote it. In other words, what inspired her to write this book called "Crank"? In my opinion, to write a book like this that's so descriptive, she would have had experienced this. In the book she wrote, " Robyn produced a V of crusty foil in the last crumbs of powder." I have no idea what this means. Like I've said, only someone who had experienced this would write this book, and I would like to know what was her purpose in writing it. I really hope the girl in this story does not die of over dosing on drugs. You feel a great connection with the character when we're both completely opposite people. I hope the ending changes with her actually going to rehab or getting help so that this addiction can stop. If there's a series of this book, I bette those to be reading about Kristina and Bree.

The character that interested me the most was the mother from the book, Crank. When Kristina went to party with Chase, Kristina did a lot of drugs. I did not think it was possible to do that many drugs and still live. She definitely put herself at risk. When she came home way past her curfew, her mother had a talk with her. She lied to her mother saying she only smoked pot. Mentioned earlier in the reading, her mother and father used to do drugs when they were younger so pot wasn't a huge deal to the mother during the talk that they were having. Later, Kristina over hears the step-father and her mother arguing that Kristina did more than smoke pot, and he accused her mother that she knows what she has been doing. She just does not want to accept the fact that her daughter is doing these mean drugs. I feel that if she wants her daughter to live and cares about her a lot, she should tell her that she knows what she is doing and she should even lie to Kristina saying that through experience the drugs are bad. I feel like the mother could change Kristina from bad too good so she is a very important person in this story.
ReplyDeleteI'm currently reading "Smoke" by Ellen Hopkins and I am starting to understand the style of Ellen's writing. She writes about teenagers having unusual struggles. These struggles seem as if they can happen in real life. In this book "Smoke", a teenage girl is beaten by her father along with her little sisters. Their father enjoys beating them.
ReplyDeleteThey shoot their father and he dies. She's seeing him every night during her sleep. It's as if she's getting haunted by her past. When she thought the only solution was to kill the monster, her solution turns into a bigger problem. We can relate nowadays, maybe not with the same scenario but sometimes when we have a conflict and finally get the chance to get rid of it, it get's worse.
Ellen Hopkins' style of writing is the most unique style I have ever seen. When she is playing a character she goes into detail. She shares her thoughts as being the character. Something I recently noticed was that the different style she has her book typed is called "free verse". Another thing is the way she has the characters set up in the books. In the book "Smoke", she has three females that have met together but were separated from a conflict that occurred. Every chapter she shares what each character is doing at the same time.
ReplyDeleteI plan on making a poster with writing and pictures on it. I want to mention the books "Crank" and "Smoke". Those were the books I read for my author study. I would like to draw some images of what I thought as I was reading. Someone could read the same book I read an have different thoughts. I would like to share some of my thoughts through drawing.
ReplyDeleteI will restate my research question and provide an answer for it. Also add quotes of Ellen. And I would like to add a short biography of her.
The author study assignment has helped me discover that there was more than just typing a story. The author experienced most of what she had written. This has helped me understand stories better by getting a better connection with the author and story.
ReplyDeleteBehind every book written their is a purpose why the author wrote the book. In this book, the thrill is what kept me reading the book and wanting to know the end.
