Daniella Angelo: Author Study Character

The character I chose from Someone Like You is Macon Faulkner. This character had a really sketchy personality which is why I chose him. He keeps his life excluded from everyone, but is very extroverted. His parents are divorced so he's supposed to be living with his mom, but he lives with his other friends instead but he never said who. He always goes to party's, does drugs, many have anger problems or issues that he hasn't worked out, and keeps his life very hidden from his girlfriend. They never exactly said why he keeps his personal life secluded, but I think it may be because it seems like he had a messed up childhood and his mom may be a drug addict/alcoholic. His character caught my attention because not everyone is the person they may seem. In school, he leads a very different life: popular, outgoing, loved by many. But when he's outside of school, he is a whole different person. He is significant in the story line because he is dating the main character and he somewhat changes her as well.

  1. Towards the end of "Someone Like You", Halley meets up with Macon at a party on New Years Eve. It was supposed to be Halley and Macon's "big night" but she got a little too intoxicated which ended things early. On the way home, Macon and Halley got into an argument causing Macon so spiral out of control and let his anger get the best of him. He wasn't paying attention to driving, and they ended up getting into a car crash. Halley was knocked up, but Macon left with not a scratch. While Halley was in the hospital, Macon did not come to visit her, which showed her his true colors. After that night, Halley ended things with Macon for good. The next big thing that happened was prom night where Scarlett ended up having her baby.
Upon finishing this book, I started a new one called "Along for the Ride" also by Sarah Dessen. So far in this book, it was about a girl named Auden who lives with her mother, who is a famous author. She just recently graduated from high school and decided to go live with her dad, his wife, and their child, for the summer. When she arrives at her dad's place, she notices that he hasn't changed much: doesn't help out with the baby, complains, and doesn't really care about anything except writing his books. Auden meets a boy at the beach and has a one night stand with him, and then meets his ex-girlfriend the next day which didn't end well. So far, I don't really know where Dessen is going with this book but it grasps my attention so I'm excited to continue reading it.

  2. Sarah Dessen definitely uses a lot of description. She describes things so well its like you're actually inside the book. Her text contains an average amount of dialogue, enough to kind of understand whats going on. All of this contributes to the mood, tone, and themes of the books because through all of her description, you can tell what the mood and/or theme of the book is whether she's sad or happy.

  3. My plans for my author study visual is to create a pamphlet. I think this will be best for my peers because its easy to look at and it's not overwhelming with information. I also think it will be best because I'm not very artistic, so being able to do something on the computer will be much easier for me. My plan is to write about her childhood, then about the types of books she writes and the type of characters she writes about, and why she writes about the things she does. Is it because she went through a rough childhood or experienced bad things? Did her friends experience bad things? Those are the kind of things I want to figure out.

  4. The Author Study assignment so far has helped me grow as a reader because I actually began to enjoy reading Sarah Dessen's book. It encouraged me to communicate with others about her reading because her books are really good and entertaining, and some may find it easy to relate too because she writes about common teenage problems. It helps me learn more about the author because I was able to find out why she started writing, and experiences that she went through or witnessed that influenced her to write.
This assignment fosters research and organizational skills because you had to research about the authors life and organizational skills with your research.
