The reason why I chose Sharon G. Flake for my author study is because when I moved here to Pennsylvania, my ESL teacher Mrs. Irwin recommended the book to me and the first book I read was called Money Hungry and I loved it the way the book was written it was the perfect writing for me to stay interested. The book was about this young girl who lived in a very harsh environment, and although her life was not so perfect she figured things out helped her mom out and did the best she could possibly do to help out.
I’m not into classic novel and Shakespeare’s writing I like realistic things, stories that are based for real events and makes sense, like for example I love “Diary of a Wimpy kid” but , since I’m a senior I have to read a higher level book so when I found her ,life had meaning, and I found a book that I was interested in.
The character I chose is Kee-Lee he’s the main characters best friend. He loved to paint portraits of people and is very talented. He loves painting, just like the main character he also has lost someone in his life. kee-lee has lost his motive in life and cares less about things and doesn't care. kee-lee is in love with this one girl called keisha and he doesn’t know how to get her to like him back.

ReplyDeleteTurns out Kee-lee dies in the book I was hoping he and his the main character to survive and make it of there but he didn’t. Kee-lee just like all the others has fallen victim of living in a harsh environment. Kee-lee become one of the people he always sworn to never become, he has lost his morals, started stealing, skipped school, and he became a different person. The main character was in shocked as he watched his best friend letting their circumstances eat him up and changed him completely. The main character dada come up with this brilliant idea to kick his son out to teach him a lesson, to let him be on his own and learn things the hard way, sadly his attempt on shaping his son almost cost him his life. Kee-lee died in a shootout, he had to go pick up money from an old man for his aunt she used them as her messengers to distribute drugs, he started getting physical with the old man and the old guy pulled out a gun and shot him. The main character witness the old man killing his brother once again he has witness someone close to him getting shot, only this time he didn’t cry he had become immune to it and death didn’t have much effect on him.
He concluded the chapter stating that death has become his best friend seems like he can’t love anyone because death will take them away, it’s sad but true no one can really argue this and tell him differently death will take everyone sooner or later. So not caring about anyone would save him some heartache.
Sharon G. Flake has a very unique style of writing, she mostly targets the younger populations, and the southern parts of the united states. Most of her books are different scenarios. Most of her character tend to be the less fortunate, the ones that lives in the ghetto parts. She also tends to choose teenagers as her main characters. She mostly writes about the different trauma young kids have to go through, especially when they were born in harsh environment. Like the book "BANG" the young boy witness his brother get shot and killed, and his best friends die in front of him. I mean its so surreal when you read her books and the sad part is although the books are fictional books but they are based on real events. She also wrights about the upper class but her most successful books are the one based on the poor character the harsh stories. One of her most successful books is " The Skin I'm In". and the book talks about everyone no matter what race or social scale she covered them all and you got a chance to understand other, and at least have an idea of how it feels like to walk in some people shoes.
ReplyDeleteI love her writing because it is so relatable to me I can sit down for hours and drown myself in her books. I can never really stay focus on other books I loose interest but these books are very easy to read and fun. after doing some research I have found out that, growing up she wasn't fortunate ,and really couldn't get the things she wanted, her life wasn't as bad as the characters in her books are but she knew how it felt like to not be able to have all you want. But she had normal average American life.

ReplyDeleteFor my other study visual I'm going to create a 3d light bulb. The light bulb symbolizes my author getting her ideas and putting them into her books, it also symbolizes my author process of thinking before she writes her books. My question is what is her inspiration behind her books, I wonder if her childhood mirrors her books and if she is writing it from personal experience I also want to know how she picks the title of her books.
