Marina E's Author Study on Sarah Dessen

I selected this author because I've heard a lot of good things about her writing, and books. I am highly interested to know if Sarah Dessen's writing has to do with events that have happened in her actual life? because her books are mainly about love and other things like death. Or why she writes about emotional aspects of life? it makes me think about what i would do if i were to be in some type of situation like that

  1. In the book "Someone Like You" by Sarah Dessen, the charater that caught my eye the most was Halley. She's this young girl who follows all the rules, doesn't have many friends, she's pretty kept to herself. She feels as though her and her mom are pretty close but are slowly fading, she worries about her friend Scarlett all the time. She's very put together. Im connected to this character because shes a lot like me, shes got a job and working, gets herslef a boyfriend, she's always there to help her friends. she is significant in the story line becuase she is the main character.

  2. Sarah Dessen writes a lot about love and tragedy. Her writing is very well done. The book "Someone Like You" Scarlett gets pregnant by her boyfriend who died in an accident on a motorcycle. The story goes on about the two girls lives and how they deal with teen pregnancy, and the peer pressure of intercourse.

The girls were very close until boys got involved. They then became distant and started living separate lives. Scarlett is dealing with all the rumors about her pregnancy and her moms constant annoyance to put it up for adoption. On the other hand, Halley is being pressured to have intercourse with her new boyfriend, meanwhile dealing with the hospitalization of her grandmother.

  3. In Sarah Dessen's books she uses a lot of description. She uses certain words to help you comprehend more of what she is trying to say. Sarah's writing contributes to the theme of the book, she writes as if she's a young girl and outs herself in the setting.

The book "To the Moon and Back" she writes as if she's a young girl, who is in love with this boy. The characters are young, still in high school, and they are headed to the boys sisters wedding. She writes from a view of the character to make it more realistic and then you don't really get lost in the context. The books contain a little dialogue but not too much that it over powers the actions that are going on or what is happening in the book.

  4. The Author Study helps me developed me as a better reader by trying to understand what she was writing and think about what I was intended to understand from the novel. It encouraged me to communicate with others about the book because it was very interesting and everything just flowed really well.

The Books Sarah Dessen wrote helped me learn more about her and what she likes and the things she enjoys doing. It also helped me learn more about her personal experiences. It fosters research and organizational skills because she had to have everything organized precisely to have flow in the book and she had to have knowledge about the experiences or events she wanted to put in the book
